On January 4, 2022, General Secretary Xi Jinping visited the Beijing 2022 MOC Coordination Centre located in Shougang Park, where he met with and extended greetings to the operation and management personnel and provided important guidance on the preparations for the Games. In March, 2022, during the “Two Sessions”, General Secretary Xi Jinping spoke highly of Big Air Shougang, describing it as a demonstration of green transformation, in which the steel industry was transformed into the sports industry.

Drawing on and carrying forward the Shougang spirit, cultural heritage, and work ethic, Shougang people are driving technological innovation to strengthen the company’s core competitiveness and accelerating efforts to create a Shougang model for Chinese-style modernization. Guided by a commitment to advancing the national Olympic strategy and aligning with Beijing’s urban functional positioning, Shougang pioneered the relocation and restructuring of its steel operations, earning the title of “Meritorious Shougang” from the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee and the Beijing Municipal People’s Government. In Caofeidian, Shougang built a “dream steel mill”, a facility representing the internationally advanced standards for the 21st century, becoming a pioneer among Chinese steel enterprises in the transition from urban-based production to coastal development. Through cross-regional joint reorganizations involving Tonghua Iron & Steel, Shuicheng Iron & Steel, Changzhi Iron & Steel, Guiyang Special Steel, and Yili Iron & Steel, Shougang Group expanded its industrial presence into coastal and resource-rich regions. Seizing the historic opportunity presented by the Winter Olympic Games, Shougang pioneered a new approach to urban renewal by accelerating the functional transformation and revitalization of Beijing’s old industrial areas, creating a new landmark for urban regeneration in the new era. Centered around the construction and transformation of Big Air Shougang, the office area of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, and the “Four Ice Venues” for curling, figure skating, short track speed skating, and ice hockey, Shougang delivered an outstanding performance as a “dual-Olympic enterprise.” It showcased to the world a new vision of Beijing, where the Olympic legacy has driven urban development and breathed new life into traditional industrial areas. The CPC Central Committee and the State Council thus awarded Shougang the title of “Collective with Outstanding Contributions to the Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games”. Featuring landmark projects such as the westward extension of Chang’an Avenue, the New Shougang Bridge, Jin’anqiao Transport Hub, Shijingshan Landscape Park, and the Industrial Heritage Park, Shougang continues to write a new chapter in urban renewal with renewed vitality. With more than 1,000 companies in fields including sci-fi, the metaverse, intelligent robotics, gaming and esports, aerospace, and other emerging industries establishing a presence here, and with major events such as the CIFTIS and the World Science Fiction Convention being hosted here, Shougang is emerging as a new hub for Beijing’s international science and technology innovation center. Driven by the coordinated development of “two parks and one river”, a diverse range of scenarios covering industry, dining, hotels, retail, exhibitions, and immersive experiences have taken shape, creating a distinctive consumption ecosystem that integrates industrial aesthetics, technological innovation, cultural heritage, and international appeal. Shougang Park, as a key area under Beijing’s “Two Zones” initiative, has been designated as a national-level nighttime cultural and tourism consumption cluster, highlighting Shougang’s pivotal role and remarkable achievements in supporting Beijing’s development as an international consumption center.

In addition, Shougang is actively advancing the development of the Caofeidian Industrial Park and Shougang Qinhuangdao Industrial Park, aiming to play a leading and exemplary role in promoting the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

Focusing on urban renewal, addressing the urgent needs of the government and the people, Shougang is building itself into an integrated urban services provider. Shougang’s environmental services and parking industries are developing rapidly, while its distinctive strengths in real estate development, prefabricated construction, automated information technologies, green building materials, and “specialized, sophisticated, distinctive, and innovative” materials and technologies are also being further demonstrated.

Shougang has proactively pursued international operations and embarked on exploring overseas opportunities since the early days of China’s reform and opening-up. In 1992, the company established Shougang Holdings (Hong Kong) Limited in Hong Kong, successfully completed the acquisition of an iron ore mine in Peru, and secured permanent mining rights covering more than 670 km2 in Marcona, Peru. Over more than three decades of transnational exploration and development, Shougang Group has built an overseas presence centered on mineral resources and international trade, supported by capital operations and financial services through its listed companies.
