Recently, the AHEAD Awards, international hotel design awards sponsored by well-known international hotel design magazine Sleeper, unveiled its Asia list for 2022. Shangri-La in Beijing Shougang Park won three awards: Best Hotel of the Year, Renovated Hotel of the Year and Lobby & Public Space of the Year.

Invested in and built by Shougang Construction Investment Co., Ltd., Shangri-La is an important cooperation between the Shougang Group and Shangri-La Group. The hotel is located in the core area of Shougang Park, in the landscape of Shijingshan and Qunming Lake, adjacent to Big Air Shougang and Chang’an Mills. It has transformed the former Shougang Power Plant into a new urban living space, introduced environmental and technological concepts, met the needs of business activities, holidays and leisure, and helped to build new landmarks for urban rejuvenation.

Led by Italian designer Piero Lissoni of Lissoni Casal Ribeiro S.p.A, Shangri-La fully respects the value of industrial culture and historical relics. The former Shougang Power Plant has been comprehensively transformed while retaining the precious industrial cultural characteristics and original ecological industrial style to the greatest extent, fully showing the inherent tension and bold architectural form contained in the industrial relics. Meanwhile, integrating modern Chinese design elements and adhering to the concept of “green sustainability”, the entire building space is like a vibrant “plant garden”, making it a model of “harmony between old and new” in contemporary hotel design, and reflecting the aesthetic style of contemporary architecture. From the former Shougang Power Plant to today’s Shangri-La, the vivid practices of Shougang Park in promoting the realization of “four revivals” are presented.

According to the aesthetic standards of different regions around the world, the AHEAD Awards are divided into the five divisions of America, Asia, Middle East & Africa, Europe and Global, and have been successfully held seven times. The awards are evaluated annually based on aesthetics, user experience, project feasibility, etc., and focus on the masterpieces of leading architects, designers and hotel operators in the industry.
