As the Winter Olympic Games approach, the giant “Wonderful Winter Olympics” Chinese knot, the core part of the 2022 Winter Olympics flower bed undertaken by the Shougang Construction Group’s Steel Structure Company, was recently installed, and the whole flower bed was assembled and displayed in Tian’anmen Square.

With the Chinese knot as the centerpiece, the giant flower bed is inlaid with the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic emblem, winter elements features, the five rings and embedded snow patterns, symbolizing the celebration of the Winter Olympics across all continents. The flower bed is composed of four parts: the sloping frame, base, lower column of the core tube and Chinese knot. The whole flower bed is 17 meters high and 12 meters wide, and the sloping frame is 38.6 meters in diameter. The entire creation is able to withstand force 12 winds. Designed to incorporate the Winter Olympic emblem and winter elements, it expresses best wishes for the Beijing Winter Olympics. During the Winter Paralympics, the Winter Olympic emblem will be replaced by the Winter Paralympic emblem, and the colorful plant mulch at the bottom will be replaced by hardy flowers.

Wang Kewen, Project Manager of the First Project Department of the Shougang Construction Group’s Steel Structure Company, said that Tangshan Haigang Shougang Construction Steel Structure Co., Ltd. undertook the task of creating the giant “Wonderful Winter Olympics” Chinese knot flower bed. The project is composed of four parts: the sloping frame, base, lower column of the core tube and Chinese knot. The old sloping frame was reused and the other components were newly made. Due to the large size of the individual components, tight schedule and numerous protection surfaces involved in field operation, the project had high requirements for its preparation and construction organization and coordination ability. 

In order to ensure full completion within the required construction period, the Xiji Processing Plant of the Steel Structure Company worked 24 hours a day, fabricated all specially shaped parts within one week, assembled the base, lower column of the core tube and large units of the Chinese knot in two days, and pre-assembled the main parts and reviewed the overall effect and dimensions of the key joints on December 25th, 2021.

The Company marshaled its best minds and improved its practical ability through many drills. With skills accumulated from 14 consecutive years of experience in making and installing National Day flower beds in Tiananmen, it strictly controlled safety and quality during construction, followed the schedule and vigorously promoted the project’s construction progress. From January 7th, the Xiji Processing Plant conducted a total element drill according to the whole-process installation standards of Tian’anmen Square. It carried out every work link in strict accordance with the construction standards of Tian’anmen Square, and each step was timed to the minute. It took two days to complete the overall pre-assembly drill of the base, lower column of the core tube, Chinese knot, sloping frame and light box. The full cycle drill and overall effect assessment were completed on January 9th, and the site was ready for installation. At 24:00 on January 10th, the installation of the Winter Olympic flower bed in Tian’anmen Square officially began. After four construction cycles in the early morning, the installation of the base and lower column of the core tube was completed. On January 15th, all installation tasks were successfully completed, and the giant “Wonderful Winter Olympics” Chinese knot flower bed was unveiled in Tian’anmen Square to welcome the Winter Olympic Games.
