Shougang Ski Jump Platform, located in Beijing Shougang Park, is the only newly-built snow event competition venue for the Beijing Winter Olympics. It will host the snowboarding and freestyle skiing events of the Games, and produce four gold medals. Snow-making on the platform is expected to end around January 20th, depending on weather conditions. It mainly includes three stages, namely snow-making on the track, snow storage in the appointed area and snow filling by the Secondary Shaping Team. Nearly 8,000 m3 of snow will be made on the track, which will be completed and handed over to the Secondary Shaping Team for shaping before December 31st. Meanwhile, the Mountain Operation Team will make snow in the 3,600 m3 snow storage area before January 10th as required and planned, and complete snow filling before January 20th according to the requirements of the experts in the Secondary Shaping Team. In this snow-making process, the Mountain Operation Team under the Venue Operation Team specially added four snow cannons on the basis of the original seven to cope with the characteristics of late cooling and short cold wave time in downtown Beijing. On that day, the Mountain Operation Team set up four snow guns and two snow cannons in the take-off area on the track, two snow guns and two snow cannons in the end area, and one snow gun as a backup.
During on-the-spot interviews, the reporter observed that the Shougang people at the site were conscientious and dedicated to their posts. It was quite cold outside during snow-making, but the moment the snow was made, they all had big smiles on their faces. When the reporter asked if it was cold, they replied, “Even though it’s cold, we feel warm when we see the snow.”
Han Dong from the Marketing Department of the Shouyuan Sports Company is the manager of the Mountain Operation Team under the Venue Operation Team. He explained that the mountain operations mainly include snowmaking, installation and maintenance of the safety protection system, maintenance of the grooming machine, purchase and management of general and large-scale sports equipment, management of athletes’ shuttle buses, etc. He said, “As a youth of Shougang, it’s a rare opportunity for me to participate in the service guarantee of the Winter Olympics. In my work, I’ll carve every detail with the Olympic spirit, craftsmanship spirit and Shougang spirit, and contribute to the strength of youth for the Winter Olympics”. Wei Wei from the Marketing Department of the Shouyuan Sports Company is the snowmaking supervisor of the Mountain Operation Team under the Venue Operation Team. He is mainly responsible for the arrangements of the overall snow-making plan, deployment of personnel and communication and coordination with other business areas. He said, “As a selected member of the Group, I feel greatly honored to participate in the service guarantee of the Beijing Winter Olympics. I’ll devote myself to it with the fullest enthusiasm and most positive attitude.”
Entering the snowmaking pump house, the reporter met Liu Yuchuan, assistant of the Coordination Department of the SGCG Ski Jump Platform Project and manager of the Mountain Operation Team under the Venue Operation Team. He told the reporter that if the whole snowmaking system is compared to the human body, the snowmaking pump house is like the heart, mainly including the snowmaking control system terminal, reservoir, cold water tower, water pump, etc., and the water pump pressurizes and transports water to all points through water supply pipes to ensure a sufficient water supply for the snowmaking equipment. Shougang is the owner of the Ski Jump Venue, and all Shougang people involved in the infrastructure guarantee are going all out to ensure adequate water, electricity, energy, equipment, etc. for the snowmaking task (for related picture reports, see the fourth edition).
