On March 15th, the Gastrointestinal Surgery Department of Peking University Shougang Hospital won the title “Beijing Advanced Collective of Poverty Alleviation Cooperation” at the Summary and Commendation Conference of Beijing Poverty Alleviation Cooperation held at the Beijing Conference Center.

Based on the needs of its counterpart areas, Peking University Shougang Hospital closely follows the goal of creating a moderately prosperous society, coordinates and promotes medical counterpart assistance with Ningcheng Central Hospital in Inner Mongolia, implements assistance contents such as sinking market medical resources, medical technology training and medical personnel training, and effectively promotes the upgrading of medical services in the relevant areas. The Gastrointestinal Surgery Department of Peking University Shougang Hospital, as the implementation team of counterpart assistance, identifies the actual problems, establishes the “accurate, clear and goal-oriented” work concept, promotes the upgrading of comprehensive medical and health services, and effectively enhances the people’s sense of acquisition, happiness and security in the recipient areas.

The medical staff of the Gastrointestinal Surgery Department are led by Gu Jin, Dean of Peking University Shougang Hospital and a well-known expert in gastrointestinal oncology surgery in China, and Lei Fuming, Head of the Gastrointestinal Surgery Department of Shougang Hospital. Since taking up the mission in 2018, based on the most urgent local medical needs, this team has supported the development of counterpart assistance departments in such aspects as discipline construction, academic development, technical guidance, talent training and management level improvement, and actively provided rich learning resources and platforms for the aided medical units, thereby creating a good learning and working environment for local doctors visiting Peking University Shougang Hospital for further study, and promoting remote diagnosis and treatment services. By means of a series of measures, the overall medical and health service capacities of counterpart assistance departments have rapidly developed; for example, the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer has been significantly improved, the recipient departments have performed laparoscopic surgery independently at the third and fourth levels, and the construction of medical teams in the areas has been continuously strengthened.

Over the years, Peking University Shougang Hospital has attached great importance to cooperation on poverty alleviation. Adhering to the goal of improving the service capacity of recipient hospitals, the Party Committee of Shougang Hospital sticks to the principles of “precise strategy, adapting to local conditions, selecting people scientifically and making overall arrangements”, and organizes the linkage of multiple departments and sections in the Hospital. They have successively participated in medical and educational counterpart assistance in Xinjiang, Tibet and Mongolia, and offered medical support in Qinghai, Yunnan, Guizhou, Beijing suburbs, etc. With practical actions, they have implemented the major decision-making program “Win the Fight against Poverty” proposed by the CPC Central Committee and State Council. With their hearts, emotions and efforts, they have accomplished excellent health poverty alleviation, solidly promoted cooperation with counterpart assistance departments and demonstrated Shougang’s poverty alleviation responsibility.
