A Rendezvous of Ice and Fire A Color-splashing Beijing The New Year Countdown for Locals and Overseas Guests at Shougang Park

On December 31, 2019, Shougang Park was filled with the contagious festive atmosphere. The 2020 Beijing New Year’s Eve Countdown Celebration and the 4th Beijing Ice and Snow Cultural Tourism Festival were held here delightfully. This is also the ninth time for Beijing to hold the New Year's Eve Countdown as a representative of the East Eighth District. The former eight countdown events were held at the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, the Badaling Great Wall, the Olympic Park (two sessions), the Forbidden City Temple, the Olympic Forest Park, and Yongding Gate.

At night and by the Yongding River and at the foot of Shijingshan, the bright lights of Shougang Park illuminated the festival. The fiery red three blast furnaces complemented the white and clear Shougang Ski Jumping Platform and the magnificent new Shougang Bridge. As an important part of Beijing's West Mountain-Yongding River Cultural Belt and an important regional function node of Beijing’s overall urban planning, on the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Shougang, Shougang Park is working hard to create a “new landmark of the capital city in the new era.” The precious industrial relics in the park are organically integrated with rich ice and snow Olympic elements, producing new sparks, echoing with the activity theme of “A Rendezvous of Ice and Fire and A Color-splashing Beijing” whilst marking down an new chapter of heritage and development.

That night, the "Charming Beijing" traditional cultural experience event was first held in the exhibition hall of Shougang Park. Local and overseas guests participated in filigree inlays, woodblock watermarks, Beijing lanterns, shadow paper-cuts, windmills, moon-shaped fans, facial makeup, and other unique non-traditional experiences, and enjoyed the innovative program called “Peking Opera Ballet,” the fascinating acrobatic diabolo and magic performances integrating Chinese and Western cultures, captivated by the charm of Beijing traditional culture and modern innovative art.

At 23:40, the New Year countdown celebration art performance kicked off. In the first chapter “A Date with Flowers: Legendary Changes of the Capital City,” the original poem "How Can I Forget Such Moment" expresses the century-long changes and development of Shougang; the second chapter “Winter Sonata: A Date with Snow and Ice in the Olympic City” expresses the anticipation for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and showing the people's enthusiasm for the capital city to actively respond to 300 million people on the ice and snow via the ice and snow carnival taking ice arena on the stage as the center; the third chapter, “The Road to Dream: New Start, New Journey, New Era,” invites the capital representatives from various industries to sing “We Are All Dreamers” passionately, expressing their ambition to stand at a new starting point, embrace a new era and strive for a new journey in the new year.

Nearing the midnight, the Fourth Beijing Ice and Snow Cultural Tourism Festival was officially launched. With the theme of “The Passionate Ice and Snow, the Amazing Beijing,” six major themed activities, including New Year’s celebration, festival Beijing, cultural performances, ice and snow events, cultural exhibitions, cultural exhibitions will be held during the New Year's Day to the Lantern Festival.

Four World Tourism Cities Federation cities, including Edinburgh in the UK, Samarkand in Uzbekistan, Punta Cana in Dominica, and Galle in Sri Lanka also sent blessings via video. At 23:59, more than a thousand Chinese and foreign guests started the countdown to the 2020 Beijing New Year. The audience shouted in unison to the countdown of 10 seconds before the clock struck for the year 2020 resounded in Shougang Park where people embraced each other and celebrated the arrival of the New Year together!
