Shougang Technician College Opens up Green Channel for New Students to Grow and Excel in Poverty-stricken Areas

On September 1, teachers and students of Shougang Technician College arrived at the school early to make preparations for the welcoming of freshmen. The freshmen and parents hail from all districts and counties in the city reported to the college, each with a bright vision and expectation for the future. Unlike previous years, 45 freshmen came from poverty-stricken areas outside Beijing this year.

Shougang Technician College assumes the responsibility of eradicating poverty through skills education, actively uncovering potentials to bring out the best from them, studies current policies, and implements consistent responsibility of alleviating poverty. The College takes Zhangjiakou City, Baoding City, Hebei Province, and Tianzhen County of the Shanxi Province as its beneficiaries, going deep into the poverty-stricken areas to launch work recruitment initiative. It opens up a green channel for poor students to grow and excel, which is a great effort in helping poor students to create card profile for themselves. The college strictly implements the subsidy policies of Beijing Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau for poor families, disabled families, low-income families with minimum living insurance, etc. On this basis, the college student subsidy centers studies and formulates five waivers of “free textbooks, free accommodation, free physical examination, free labor protection, free household appliances”, and allocates special assistance policies of living expenses and work study subsidies. The teaching department also studies and formulates the basic curriculum convergence and professional curriculum training program for poor students, optimizes the teaching strength, and consolidates skills training foundation. The employment department has contacted high-quality enterprises such as the Second and Third Academies of CASIC in advance, studied targeted training methods to ensure students’ employment, and intentionally setting the “skill-based poverty alleviation” effort of the college into motion.

As a national key vocational college with 65-year history of running a school, Shougang Technician College actively emphasizes the advantages of integrating secondary and higher vocational education, establishes the “3+3” and “3+2” training modes, linking secondary and higher vocational education, providing a good platform for students’ employment and lifelong education, besides meeting the needs of students’ growth and development. This means actively adapting to market demand, actively applying for new majors, and having successfully applied for six new majors including tour guiding, accounting, nursing and early childhood education, exhibition service and management, urban rail transit vehicle application and maintenance. At the same time, the welding processing major and the electrical automation equipment installation and maintenance major have also applied for the training of school-system technicians, passed the expert evaluation of Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, pioneered the training of school-system technicians in Beijing, and upgraded the school-running level. To solve the students’ problem of enrollment, all members of the enrollment team went deep into schools of origin to publicize the enrollment face-to-face with candidates and parents, creating interest among the candidates with the good expectations of their major, advantages of entering higher education, and quality of employment. Its innovation in enrollment and setup effort in popular professional preparatory courses were highly applauded by candidates and parents through its detailed, always available, warm services and management, setting a great role model in such initiative of its kind. Through the joint efforts of the whole college, 634 freshmen were admitted in August.

Reporters in the freshman registration scene saw that each faculty member who participated in the work of greeting freshmen were conscientiously responsible and loyal to their duties, enthusiastically served students and parents, patiently answered their questions, strived to provide students and parents with the best quality of service, fully demonstrated the college faculty’s professional quality and dedication, consciously followed the concept of “everything for freshmen, all for freshmen”, apart from having imprinted a good college image in the hearts of freshmen and parents.
