“5, 4, 3, 2, 1”, following the command from the commander of Shougang 70 Command post, during the grand celebration held on Tiananmen Square on 1st October, the largest “five-starred red flag”, which was developed, produced, installed and operated by Shougang, was slowly raised over Tiananmen Square, attracting the attention of all spectators in an instant.

On the giant “five-starred red flag” mesh screen, the clear red was flowing, which seems to be given life. At that moment, under the “five-starred red flag”, there was a team whose members were hugging together, many of which had tears on their faces. They were the developer, producer, installer and operator of the giant mesh screen. They have a common ID “SG” on their work clothes, and all have a common name, Shougang staff.

At the beginning of this year, Shougang took up a difficult and glorious political mission, namely to be responsible for the manufacture, installation and operation of the largest “five-starred red flag” mesh screen for the National Day celebration.

To undertake the service guarantee task for the National Day grand ceremony on the shows the complete trust of the central government, Beijing municipal party committee and municipal government on Shougang. It is the honor of Shougang and Shougang staff. The “five-starred red flag” is an LED mesh screen with a length of 90 meters and a height of 60 meters. This large LED mesh screen is made up of polymer rope mesh, reinforcing mesh, 6 large cranes, 44,376 full-color LED lamp spots and more than 177,000 light beads, and it applies high-tech methods to present videos to the world in brilliant colors and great size.

At first, the artists of the National Day celebration command department put forth a vision that raising a huge five-starred red flag over Tiananmen Square, would have very good effect and the scene would be exciting. Li Tingxiang introduced: “For this idea, 4 to 5 of our people communicated with the National Day celebration party command department in the early stage to start the preparation work. However, the artists did not give specific data, specification, selected material and equipment required for the design and manufacture of the screen, leaving Shougang staff to face the series of problems during the whole process.”

It is not easy task to put the vision of the artists to real application. Shougang technicians started from scratch in terms of the data and materials related to the design, research, development and manufacture of the huge five-starred red flag. They did it bit by bit, and in small steps. Through repeated rounds of experiments, they made continuous improvement and optimization to the mesh screen manufacturing plan. The giant mesh screen structure is made up of grid line, steel wire mesh and lamp spots. More than 177,000 lamp beads are installed to resist fresh gale. At a height of 67 meters, the allowable tolerance for the 6 sets of equipment must always be kept within 3 centimeters.

Under the common command from Shougang 70 Command post, four field exercises on the installation of the mesh screen device were conducted at Tiananmen Square in the month of September. Through the field exercise at Tiananmen Square, all the personnel became familiar with the process and atmosphere for 1st October. The participants were prepared mentally and psychologically.

At 10:00 p.m. on 30th September, the LED mesh screen device transport vehicle and related construction vehicles set off from Shougang test base and entered the venue’s standby position. At 7: 00 a.m. on 1st October, 781 installation construction and management personnel waited at their standby position. Immediately after the mass parade, they entered into their designated position inside Tiananmen Square and proceeded to install the equipment. At 17:15, the giant mesh screen began to rise. After 25 minutes, it reached the height of 67 meters. At this moment, the giant mesh screen completed the entrance, and this led to the start of troubleshooting and other works to prepare for the evening National Day grand celebration.

In order to ensure that there will be no hiccups for the lifting, the project department has two drivers for each crane, one for standby and one for use. In addition, a spare crane is prepared, which also has two drivers.

With the consistent lean and meticulous approach, Shougang ensured zero failure, zero error and zero operation risk for the mesh screen project. When the largest “five-starred red flag” fluttered over Tiananmen Square, Shougang builders reported to the nation: we made it!

For this glorious moment, they had labored for the entire nine months.
