On the early morning of May 23, 23 young volunteers from Shougang greeted the morning glow and held a handover service at Chairman Mao’s Memorial Hall, taking charge of two weeks of volunteer service at the Chairman Mao Zedong Memorial Hall. During the period, they would provide services such as grooming, information consultation, language translation, assisting the disabled, and simple emergency services for people who come to pay a visit to Chairman Mao's remains.

In this recruitment of volunteers, the young people of the whole group actively took part, some of which canceled the travel itineraries they had arranged and some took part in this activity from afar. They think taking part in this voluntary activity is a glorious political task, a good action for patriotic education, and a rare opportunity to show “the spirit of Shougang” and train the individuals.

In addition to service, Shougang young volunteers also carried out activities such as Chairman Mao’s poetry recitation competition, basketball match, and speech contest to further enhance team cohesion and service awareness. It is reported that the Shougang Youth League Commission has organized young volunteers to take part in the voluntary service project of Chairman Mao Zedong Memorial Hall many times. The number of participants has reached 161, and the cumulative service time has lasted 13,000 hours.

During the interview, the reporter learned that when Chairman Mao Zedong Memorial Hall was built, Shougang not only provided high-quality steel, but also selected hundreds of technical backbone to participate in the installation of core equipment and civil construction of Chairman Mao Zedong Memorial Hall. Li Naizhe, a retired worker at Shougang, recalled the construction scene at that time and said excitedly, “There was no modern mechanical installation equipment at that time, and the assembly of pipe fittings was completed by hand. Everyone used a hacksaw to break a steel pipe, then used a steel file to make grooves and finally welded. Workers continued to work after the simple treatment of bleeding blisters on the hands!” In an interview, Yang Weiguo, a retired worker at Shougang, said, “in order to ensure timely and accurate construction materials for the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, everyone was divided into three classes and worked continuously for 24 hours. Without lifting equipment, they used hand-held, shoulder-smashed materials, and timely delivered materials such as stone and wood to the scene. They were high and high. Standards and high quality completed the construction task.”
