Shougang’s Two Bridge Steel Technologies Lead the World

At the Technical Achievement Review Conference on the Development and Application of Low-strength Ratio, Easy Welding, High-performance Bridge Steel for Super-large Steel Bridges held by Shougang recently, the Chinese Society for Metals gathered more than 20 experts of the metallurgy and bridge industries from the China Iron and Steel Association, the Iron and Steel Research Institute, Beijing University of Science and Technology, Northeastern University, CITIC Metal and other units. They highly praised Shougang’s steel bridge technology innovation capacity, physical quality, and application performance. The production technologies of high-strength low-strength ratio bridge steel and extremely thick bridge steel have reached the advanced level by the international standard.

The development of the bridge industry in China has led to the development of bridge steel. Shouqin Corporation has been making efforts to build the “Shougang-made” high-quality bridge steel products. While closely cooperating with domestic leading bridge enterprises and bridge design institutes, it has focused on the latest development of bridge steel and user needs at home and abroad to accelerate the promotion of product development and technological innovation. The market share of bridge steel remained the first for three consecutive years from 2015 to 2017. The cumulative supply of high-performance bridge steel was 550,000 tons, and the market share of high-strength bridge steels of 420 MPa and above surpassed 81%.

Q500qE bridge steel is so far the steel with the greatest technical difficulty by public recognition. The professional and technical personnel of Shouqin Corporation innovated the rolling process, achieving a 98.5% pass rate of performance and stable, efficient, and mass production; it successfully developed the domestic maximum thickness of 115mm S420ML bridge steel in TMCP state, and exclusively supplied the world’s largest wall-thickness slab bridge, the Pangma Bridge in Bangladesh; it has successfully developed the weather-resistant bridge steel Q420qFNH for use in high-cold areas to meet the extreme high-cold environment requirements at minus 60 degrees Celsius, being currently the steel that can stand against the coolest environment among products of the same kind. Up to now, Shouqin Corporation has participated in the construction of more than 100 large bridge projects. There are 17 super-large bridges with a main span of 400 meters or more, accounting for 35.4% of the bridges that it constructed. Among them, it supplied to the cable-stayed bridge with the world’s largest span high-low tower combination – the Gongtie Bridge in Wuhu, the first domestic coating-free road bridge – the Guanting Reservoir Bridge, and the domestically widest cable-stayed steel tower bridge – the “Harmony Gate” Bridge over the Yongding River, and participated in the construction of well-known projects at home, such as the Hutong Yangtze River Bridge, the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway Bridge, the Beipan River Bridge, and the Aizhai Bridge. After winning the title of the “excellent supplier” of China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Co., Ltd. in 2015 and 2016, Shouqin Corporation was awarded as an outstanding bridge plate manufacturer of Grade A enterprise in the national steel industry chain in 2017.
