From December 13 to December 14, the “Key Technology for Going Green of Steel Process” Project was launched together with the holding of the implementation plan consultation conference. Led by Shougang Group, the Project was undertaken jointly by 15 organizations including large iron and steel enterprises such as Baoshu Group, Masteel, TISCO and Ansteel, prestigious institutions such as Beijing University of Science and Technology, Southeast University and Central South University and well-known research institutes and design institutes such as Central Iron & Steel Research Institute and CIE.

The Key Technology for Going Green of Steel Process, a key national R & D project, makes full use of the advantage of the “Industry-University-Institute Cooperation”, which features full-chain design and integrated implementation. To solve the problems of high energy consumption and large pollutant discharge arising from the steel production process, it focuses on the development of a variety of technologies: high-efficiency and low-power sintering technologies, namely, selective cycle of flue gas, low sinter return ratio and deep removal of multiple pollutants; alkaline pellet preparation and high-proportion pellet smelting technology; green coke technology of dry coal; metallurgical byproduct recycling and high-value transformation technology; resource-saving high corrosion resistant coating, anti-haze antimicrobial coating technology. In doing so, a systematic complete technology for going green of steel process was ultimately formed, and five project demonstration lines were established as well. The implementation of the project substantially reduced the energy consumption and pollutant discharge in the steel process, thus leading the green development of China’s steel industry.

At the meeting, while Zhao Minge, senior of Shougang Group and head of the project, introduced the overall situation of the project, the directors of each task team explained their specific implementation plans. The staff of the HTRDC Special Project Office proposed requirements concerning the project management on the basis of combining the “Interim Measures for the Management of National Key R & D Projects” with the features of Shougang’s project. In addition, Experts of the special project general team and experts of the project advisory group questioned and made recommendations on the project implementation plan.

It took the team members more than one year’s wholehearted efforts to finish the planning, applying to launching of the project and achieve a preliminary success. To guarantee a smooth implementation of the project, Shougang set up the advisory group of experts, the executive center group, the financial management group and the management. The project management office, which is supported by Shougang Institute of Technology, will provide good service and support for the promotion of the project. Through undertaking the project, the management office will for sure make great breakthroughs in a great many key technologies and build a platform for long-term academic cooperation and exchange, which will eventually help integrate Shougang into the national innovation system.
