On October 31, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development officially announced the winners of the 2017 China Habitat Environment Award and the “Beijing New Shougang Urban Renewal Project” won the “2017 China Habitat Environment Example Award”, which is the highest award in the national habitat environment construction.

In March 2017, the General Office of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development released the Notice of the Declaration of China Habitat Environment Award in 2017. Capital Development Investment Fund Management Co., Ltd. actively carried out the organization, preparation, review and tracking of application materials. In accordance with the declaration requirements, combined with the style of characteristic cities in the Shougang Park, for expanding the impact of the new Shougang area on the activation and utilization of industrial resources in urban renewal and development process, the company applied for "2017 China Habitat Environment Example Award " with “the Beijing new Shougang urban renewal project” and its theme:” shaping the characteristics of the city.” During this selection, a total of 60 projects were selected, including 4 projects in Beijing.

The new high-end integrated service area of Shougang is located on both sides of the West Extension of Chang’an Avenue and the east of the Yongding River with a total area of 8.63 square kilometers. With the unparalleled natural environment, historical accumulation and cultural charm, the old industrial zones of Shougang have typical steel processing facilities densely distributed with distinctive features of the steel industry. The new high-end integrated service area of Shougang serves functions as “the traditional industrial green transformation and upgrading demonstration area, the high-end industrial innovation highland of the western Beijing and the creative base of post-industrial culture and sports”. The renovation will  make use of industrial remains first, and the utilization of industrial remains will grasp the city governance renovation opportunity to inject new vitality to the industry through urban transformation and upgrade and transform Shougang Park into an example and competitive product for renewal and development of urban industrial zones in China based on cultural inheritance, continuation of historical memory and creation of distinctive characteristics without mass-demolition and mass-construction.

Shougang works out high-level systematic plans for their park and makes it reach the international advanced level with special concentration on its quality despite a long period of time. Led by Beijing Municipal Institute of City Planning & Design, experts and academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering were jointly organized to build the Implementation Management Collaboration Platform while Tsinghua University, Beijing Institute of Architectural Design, Peking University, Beijing Shougang CCTN, Beijing Gejian Construction Design Company and many other domestic and foreign well-known design and research institutes carried out the design together. Led by Academician Xu Kuangdi, five academicians including Wu Liangyong jointly completed the top-level design of the program and carried out special studies \creatively applying the ideas of “weaving cities”, “sponge cities” and “urban renewal” to the planning.

At present, Beijing Shougang Beijing Park has been included in the pilot projects of transformation of the old industrial districts in the country, pilot areas for the comprehensive reform of national service industries, China National Sustainable Communities (CNSCs), Zhongguancun Science Park, pilot cities for smart cities, and green ecological demonstration zone in Beijing, and has become the first C40 positive climate model area, awarded “2017 Greenbuild Leadership Award” of the Greenbuild China.

A number of key construction projects have been accelerated. The transformation of about 100,000 square meters of industrial remains in West Ten Winter Olympic Square has been completed, which meets the office, conference, display and other functional supporting and service requirements of the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee and is highly praised by the International Olympic Committee President Bach; a cooperation agreement for preparing for the Winter Olympics and jointly building the National Sports Industry Demonstration Zone signed with the State Sports General Administration should be implemented and the construction of the winter training and supporting facilities for the national team should be accelerated; the “Snowboard Jumping Platform” project in the Winter Olympics is located in Shougang Park; the implementation plan for the new Shougang international talent community construction is introduced; the Beijing station for overseas academicians and experts is unveiled and settled; the first-class development project in the South-East District is approved by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform and set up formally.

The development and construction of Shougang Park is closely linked with the national development and the coordinated development of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei. Based on the existing industrial heritage resources and natural landscape resources in the park, Shougang is accelerating the development and construction of the park, creating the unique features of “seeing the mountains, seeing the water and remembering Shougang” and making efforts to build a new landmark of urban renewal.
