Shougang High-end Bridge Steel Supports the World’s Longest Span Combined Bridge

A few days ago, the two ends of the main arch of Tiansheng Port Special Ship Channel Bridge of Shanghai-Nantong Yangtze River Bridge, the world’s largest span combined steel arch bridge, were connected successfully. When Shanghai-Nantong Railway is open to traffic, the railway running time from Shanghai to Nantong will be shortened to about 1 hour. The high-end steel of the bridge is 14.8 thousand tons, exclusively supplied by Shouqin Corporation.

Shanghai-Nantong Yangtze River Bridge is a dominant project across the Yangtze River of Shanghai-Nantong Railway, China’s coastal railway, with a total length of 11,072 meters. After its completion, it will create a number of world records: its main channel adopts steel girder cable-stayed bridge structure with a main span of 1,092 meters, which is the world’s first breakthrough in kilometer-scale dual railway cable-stayed bridge, nearly 10 times longer than the Sydney Harbor Bridge; its special channel adopts rigid girder and flexible arch structure with a main span of 336 meters, which is the world’s largest span combined steel arch bridge; its main tower is 325 meters high, as high as about a 100-storey building, which is the world’s highest main tower of a combined cable-stayed bridge. 

The ship channel bridge of the main bridge with engineering characteristics of large volume, new materials, high density and accurate closure, is extremely strict about steel plate supply. It must use the bridge steel of the highest strength, whose yield ratio must be 0.86. The unevenness must be controlled below 3 millimeters per meter, which is extremely difficult. Shouqin Corporation’s Q420qE steel bridge is combined with the supply technical specification requirements of high toughness and low yield ratio of the bridge steel of Baishatuo Yangtze River Bridge Project under China Railway Bridge Bureau. In order to make up for the deficiencies of serious thickness effect, low strength, poor welding performance and poor weather resistance of traditional steel plate, the company continued to optimize chemical compositions of bridge steel, TMCP process design and tempering process and other aspects, and developed a kind of high-performance bridge steel with excellent strength, toughness, weld ability and weather ability. The bridge steel has the features of low carbon and low added alloy elements, whose various performance indicators reach and are even higher than GB/T714-2015 requirements. Shouqin Corporation won the bid of contract of high-end steel bridge of the main ship channel bridge of Shanghai-Nantong Yangtze River Bridge in August 2015. According to China Railway Bridge Bureau’s project schedule, the company delivered the steel in batches with guaranteed quality in time, which ensured the successful closure of the main arch of Tiansheng Port Special Ship Channel Bridge of Shanghai-Nantong Yangtze River Bridge. Shouqin Corporation won the honorary title of “excellent supplier” of construction headquarters of Shanghai-Nantong Yangtze River Bridge in January 2016.
