A Green Building Full of Wisdom —— About the Parking Building at West Ten Winter Olympics Square, Shougang Beijing Park

A few days ago, journalists visited West Ten Winter Olympics Square, in Shougang Beijing Park. This place is surrounded by beautiful green trees and is always bustling with energy. Steel sculptures stand neatly arranged on the grassy fields, adding to the beautiful view. Next to Hushi Road, at the northernmost end of the West Ten Winter Olympics Square, stands a silver-grey building with a unique, elegant steel shape. This is the Parking Building Project at West Ten Winter Olympics Square, which has been put into operation.

Luo Gang from Shougang Construction & Investment Company stated that this Parking Building, with its pile foundation, adopted a steel structure for its upper sections and floor deck for flooring. The project began in April 2016 and was completed in May 2017. Since then, it has been put into use. The building covers an area of roughly 14500 m2, contains four floors, and accommodates 483 parking spaces.

By entering the West Ten Winter Olympics Square, following the guide signs along the broad and flat road, you may arrive at the entrance of the Parking Building. As the reporter noted, entrance involves automatic vehicle license plate identification. A screen to the right side of the entrance clearly displays the number of available parking spaces on each floor, facilitating the process of finding a free parking spot for your car. When the reporter walked into the building, their attention was drawn to the neat roads, road signs and parking instructions. A small sanitation vehicle passed by, cleaning the floor. Our reporter crossed paths with another visitor, Mr. Hu, who had retrieved his parked car and was heading for the building’s exit. He told us that the Parking Building is spacious and clean. He also noted that it had excellent lighting, contained clear guide signs, and that parking was very convenient. Our reporter noticed that the company’s customer-focused approach could be found everywhere, such as public washrooms and elevators on each floor. Signs about parking spaces for people with physical disabilities can be found at the entrance of each floor, facilitating the parking experience of visitors in need of these facilities.

Mr. Zhou, who drives a brand-new electric car, explained that his biggest concern for parking was having the ability to recharge his vehicle, due to its limited mileage. He said, pointing to a row of charging stations behind us, that each floor here has plenty of charging stations. As such, he won’t has to worry about recharging his car, if he finds himself in this area again for business. Reportedly, spaces with electric charging stations account for 35% of total parking places. This includes 44 DC charging stations and 95 AC charging stations. This totals to 139 parking places fit for electric charging, which is sufficient to meet demands. Meanwhile, the photovoltaic power generation facilities on top of the Parking Building is also taking shape. It can be called a “green building” , full of wisdom.

The Parking Building Project adheres to a high standard for quality, and a tight deadline for construction. Shougang Construction & Investment Company, Shougang Construction Company, and other units involved in project organization and construction, are working together to meet these requirements. Under the unified leadership of the Group, they stick to scientific organization and reasonable arrangements during construction. Together, they decide on the best measures to take, and they make solid efforts to guarantee the best possible quality of construction.

Our reporter learned from Shougang Construction Group that the construction crew encountered difficulties at the initial stage of construction. Excavation was carried out at the beginning of April, during which structural obstacles were discovered underground. Complicated underground structures of an old parking facility were found, as well as several transverse and longitudinal corridors. The underground corridors appeared at fifty slope-supporting piles, in the north of the parking facility. The construction crew cut through all the top plates of the original corridors, using pneumatic picks, and they placed steel bars at the bottom plates. They used a mobile crane to lift protective steel canisters that they prepared into the hole. Next, the construction crew entered the corridors to fix and seal the protective steel canisters, to guarantee the construction quality of the piles. One part of the underground parking facility contained a significant amount of sludge, and two top plates. This caused the construction to become an extremely difficult task. Upon site investigation, the project department took appropriate measures. To solve the difficulties of construction, they decided to chisel using mechanical equipment, dispose of the sludge using a sewage pump, and seal the area with lime sand bricks.

To guarantee the completion of construction tasks as requested by the guidelines, the project department appointed directors based on the conditions of the building site. These directors were put in charge of individual workers, construction management, technological management and quality management. Their job was to analyze actual field conditions, create construction schedules of the following days, and meet construction progress requirements. During construction, the technological management department, quality management department and project department formulated a quality management plan. The project department disclosed this plan to the crew ahead of time, the quality supervisor inspected and controlled the process, and the construction crew conducted self inspection, mutual inspection and hand-over inspection. Construction was carried out strictly according to the quality management plan, ensuring high construction quality, and an excellent project.
