Shougang’s High Magnetic Induction Oriented Silicon Steel Assists High-speed Rail Development of China

Recently, Shougang Co., Ltd. received a letter of gratitude from Changzhou Pacific Electric Power Equipment (Group) Co., Ltd (CPEPE). It stated that Shougang’s thin oriented silicon steel material with high performance has been applied into the world’s first ultra-low emission, energy-conserving, and environment-friendly wound core rail traction transformer, independently developed by Changzhou Pacific Electric Power Equipment (Group) Co., Ltd. It passed the national authoritative testing organization’s test, and it has been applied into the first set of intelligent substations, which are part of the high-speed railway in China.

Intelligent traction transformers are one of many significant scientific research subjects developed by China Railway. Their purpose is to help the company maintain their global leading position in the manufacturing industry of high-speed railway equipment. Compared to traditional transformers, intelligent traction transformers have a no-load loss reduction of 50% and noise reduction of 20 db. They are also equipped with real-time online status monitors, allowing an operation mode of digitalized information across the station, network communication platform, and standardized information sharing. Reforming the running traditional power station is a big overhaul for the railway industry. It will pose great significance to the construction of sample intelligent high-speed railway projects in China.

As CPEPE stated in the letter, Shougang’s thin oriented silicon steel with high performance has excellent electromagnetic performance. The surface quality is homogeneous, and it is sound in shape. It was introduced at an early stage of product design, and guidance was given throughout its use. The company made full use of the high performance of the oriented silicon steel, under working conditions with higher magnetic density. As a result, the transformer outperformed imported products in terms of electromagnetic performance, always performing better than the standard designs. In the future, CPEPE expects to increase their cooperation with Shougang. The company will intensify its efforts in scientific research, and manufacturing and service cooperation in national key equipment projects. They will forge ahead together, and promote efficient, green and intelligent grid construction inside the nation.

After experience in the industry and R&D of more than a decade, Shougang has achieved full coverage of high magnetic induction and oriented silicon steel products. As a result, the company attained an advanced, international level of quality. Shougang passed the State Grid’s certification for supply qualification, applied its products widely into production and the manufacturing of 500kV (or higher) UHV power transformers. The company made breakthroughs in the State Grid’s “Two Million” project, with a maximum voltage level of 1000kV for AC power transmission and distribution.
