If you reach the top of Mount Shijing — the “first celestial mountain of Beijing,” you can see an extraordinarily attractive scene of West Ten Area, Beijing Industrial Park of Shougang, full of vitality and surrounded by green trees. In this place resides the main center for the preparations and hosting of the 2022 Winter Olympics. The aged silos and stock bins in the old industrial area of Shougang that were used to store mineral aggregates have been transformed into these buildings. So far, the 12 individual buildings of the West Ten Winter Olympics Project have been successively transformed and thus the transformation from industrial buildings into green public buildings has been realized.

Beijing Industrial Park of Shougang used to be an important industrial base. Now it has lots of industrial relics with abundant history. In the new era, the landscapes, ecology, industrial relics and historical context of Beijing Industrial Park of Shougang have been kept well and have been added to the highlights of the urban landscape. In the afternoon of August 26, Mr. Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, praised the place by saying that selecting Beijing Industrial Park of Shougang as the office location of the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee would vitalize the old industrial relics; the concept of building landmark buildings in old industrial sites was a leading idea in the world and it was a wonderful example when he visited the office site of the Winter Olympics Organizing Committee at West Ten of Beijing Industrial Park of Shougang.

The West Ten Winter Olympics Square Project of Shougang is located at the north end of the New High-End Comprehensive Service Area of Shougang. Its total floor area is about 100,000 square meters, covering an area of about 7.7 hectares. The project includes 12 individual building subprojects: Silos 1 to 6, Stock Bin for Furnace 1, N1–2 Transfer Point, N3-3 Transfer Point, N3-2 Transfer Point and Conference Center, Employees’ Restaurant, Main Control Room of Raw Materials for Furnace 1, Joint Pump Station for Blast Furnaces 1 and 3, Parking Facilities, Dormitory for Workers from Other Places, Additional Building of Comprehensive Service Building, and N3-17 Transfer Point. The Employees’ Restaurant and Parking Facilities are the new construction subprojects, and other subprojects are the transformation subprojects which turn the old industrial buildings into buildings that facilitate offices and conferences, and corresponding supporting service facilities.

The transformation of the old industrial buildings has played an important role in the West Ten Winter Olympics Square Project, which maintained the symbolic industrial elements. Based on respect for the original industrial relic features, the functions have been transformed and the space has been updated. The contrast between old materials and new materials and the contrast between old and new space has continued the simple industrial beauty of old Shougang. On the condition that all service functions of the Winter Olympics Organizing Committee must be met, the regional unique geographic environment, the cultural features and the architectural styles have been maintained, which has made the old and new buildings mixed. The old landscapes have become mixed with the new landscapes and the old and new styles coexist. The reporter at the West Ten Winter Olympics Square has seen the transformed silos, which have the original vertical style. Some holes have been made into the walls for daylight. Some steel floors have been added to the silos as well. A landscape elevator has been built between two silos. Inside the silo is a modern office space, where international picturephone meetings can be held. The transformation has not only kept the original architectural styles and features, but also added new functions and vitality to the buildings. The mixture of industrial relics and modern elements has outlined the new silos integration, where history and modern times mix in the daylight and where the original “iron smelting stock bin” becomes a “creative square” with unique styles and features.

A leader in charge of the Capital Development Investment Fund Management Co., Ltd. said that we adhered to the green ecological principle in the transformation of the project and applied multiple energy- saving and emission-reduction technologies. We have adopted the LEED green building evaluation standard with the highest international recognition degree and the green building evaluation system issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the People’s Republic of China. The two systems have been carried out in parallel to ensure that the Winter Olympics Square Project conforms to the national standards and is accepted by the international organizations. The joint pump station is a three-star building, according to the green building evaluation standard. It was designed according to the golden certification standard of LEED-CS. At its current stage, it has obtained a golden pre-authentication certificate of LEED-CS. The other individual buildings have been designed according to the domestic green building standard. The perfect integration of nature and human landscapes at the core area of the Winter Olympics Square is full of vitality. According to the relevant introduction, the area of the Landscape Project of the West Ten Winter Olympics Square is about 60,000 square meters. A lot of plants have been densely planted on the square and made it almost completely green. Over 70 species of nursery stocks have been planted, which gives people a feeling of green and vitality. Some steel statues have been erected on top of the green grassland, which has turned the Winter Olympics Square into a beautiful scenery line.

In terms of material saving and waste recycling, some small industrial devices such as transformers and lighting equipment of the original workshops have been used in the transformed buildings. In terms of the project’s ecology and energy saving methods, many advanced technologies such as photovoltaic power generation, non-negative pressure water supply method, integrated waste water treatment technology and rainwater collection recycle technology have been adopted. The bricks used to pave landscape roads are made from the construction waste produced in the park building dismantle, which is a useful attempt to utilize the “urban mineral” resources.

To ensure that the construction tasks will be successfully and efficiently completed in the specified time period, under the unified leadership of the group, according to the mutual cooperation management mode of all the construction units, formulate corresponding management systems for the construction organizations, construction quality control, bidding, procurement, safety and environment protection, which ensures the strict implementation of all the project work according to the systems.
